The Restorative Power of Art
When children experience physical and emotional abuse or neglect, they often construct emotional barriers to defend themselves from further mistreatment. These kids tend to be withdrawn and distrustful, unable to get close to others.
Art has been shown to be a powerful tool for reaching these young people and helping them overcome their past traumas. But with dwindling school budgets and resources, art is often unavailable to the kids who need it most.
Setting Positive Change in Motion
Free Arts NYC works with community-based organizations and public schools citywide to transport art programs directly to the kids who need them. Using this collaborative, mobile approach, Free Arts NYC serves nearly 5,000 children and hundreds of parents each year.
Free Arts NYC brings the healing power of the arts and mentoring to children and families affected by abuse, homelessness, HIV/AIDS and the effects of poverty. Through painting, dance, drama, writing, music, sculpture, and photography, trained volunteers help children and their families express emotions, gain confidence in their communication abilities, and interact more effectively with others.
Free Arts NYC components include the Weekly Mentor Program, in which volunteers and professional facilitators work with children throughout the school year; the Parent and Children Together with Art (PACT) program, an eight-week session for the family; and Free Arts Days, day-long or weekend events at which up to 100 children are paired 1:1 with a buddy in artistic activities.
Through the power of creativity, Free Arts NYC gives abused and neglected children a effective way to overcome their pasts, and helps to restore their prospects for a healthy future.
"I love coming here each week because it's a place where I feel safe. I wish everyday was Wednesday."
