Safe from Repression, They Define Their Own Destinies

Crown Heights, Brooklyn, is rated among the nation's top five high-risk communities for children's welfare. Only half of the community's young women graduate from high school. Far fewer attend college. And the area has the unfortunate distinction of having the highest percentage of teen pregnancies. Not surprisingly, gender discrimination is commonplace in Crown Heights. But Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) is creating new opportunities for girls by helping them see themselves in a new light. That's why the Catalog is proud to help GGE expand its services.

New Self-image, New Possibilities

Through education, organizing, and physical fitness, GGE encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives. The organization offers more than 900 kids a safe, respectful venue in which to achieve academic excellence, explore career education and maintain healthy lifestyles. GGE also collaborates with 26 New York City schools and community-based organizations to provide girls with equitable fitness activities and informative health and self-esteem workshops.
Gender discrimination is a community problem - so GGE engages a broad spectrum of residents. For example, its Urban Leaders After-School program exists in four schools and enlists 300 middle school students ages 11 to 15, including boys, to become powerful allies in the struggle. Without Girls for Gender Equity, discrimination would obscure the talents of thousands of girls in Crown Heights and other communities they serve . Please join the Catalog and GGE in opening up a world of new opportunities for them.

"This program helps girls find a place where they belong. It gives us hope and strength to know someone cares about us."
