Row New York

Finding Themselves a River of Opportunity

It started in 2002 with a single boat and eight eager participants. Today, Row New York provides more than 2,000 girls the opportunity to take to the water in what's been called the ultimate team sport, rowing. The Catalog will make even greater expansion possible.

Rowing has a powerful effect on participants. There are no individual stars; success depends upon group precision and the power of athletes working in unison. Row New York participants range in age from 10 to 18. They practice six days a week - rain or shine - on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Accomplished rowers move on to compete against elite schools in regional regattas. Row New York places equal importance on academic success. Girls are provided with academic assistance emphasizing college planning sessions, SAT preparation and field trips.

With Each Stroke, Girls Gain Power and Hope

Rowing consistently produces amazing results - both physical and academic. Girls once overweight are now lean, strong and healthier; those who lacked confidence are now determined, independent and accomplished. Through its two-pronged programming approach, Row New York has helped to set these students on paths to lifelong success. Perhaps Row New York's proudest accomplishment is that one hundred percent of its graduates have gone on to college, with many receiving full or partial scholarships. By transforming the lives of so many deserving girls, Row New York has earned three years of funding from the Catalog for Giving.

"If I feel like I'm not doing well in a subject, I'm just going to study harder and work harder. Before Row New York, if I wasn't doing well, I wouldn't try."

- REGINA, Age 16
